AI Strategy & Experience readiness
Where the business strategy pillar asks whether AI is sponsored and funded, this pillar asks what the organization is actually betting on: how far generative AI has spread beyond experiments, and whether AI is inside the products and customer experiences that earn revenue.
It is scored separately because the two often diverge. Plenty of organizations have a sponsored AI strategy and no AI in the product, and a smaller number have AI in the product with no strategy around it.
What this pillar measures
Generative AI adoption and AI in products and customer experience.
AI Strategy & Experience is weighted at 9% of the overall AI Readiness score, which makes it the 7th heaviest of the nine pillars. 3 scored questions feed its maturity score. See how the weights combine.
What we ask
Every scored answer describes a recognizable state of the world rather than an agree/disagree rating. These are the questions behind this pillar.
- How much of your software team uses an AI coding assistant every day?An AI coding assistant — like GitHub Copilot — suggests and writes code as engineers type. If you don't build software in-house, pick "Not rolled out".
- In the last year, has AI noticeably changed any of your products or services for customers?Whether AI changed something customers actually experience — not just an internal tool.
- How well does your organization use generative AI?Generative AI creates new content — text, images, code — like ChatGPT.
What each level looks like
Each answer maps to a maturity score from 0 to 4. Reading down a column shows what an organization at that level typically says.
| 1Awareness | Not rolled out |
| 2Active | A few people, informally |
| 3Operational | One or two teams |
| 4Systemic | Most of the team |
| 5Transformational | Everyone, and we track how much it's used and what it saves |
| 1Awareness | No |
| 2Active | We've added AI features, but nothing's really changed |
| 3Operational | One product has genuinely shifted because of AI |
| 4Systemic | Several products have shifted |
| 5Transformational | AI is now a main reason customers choose us |
| 1Awareness | We're not using it |
| 2Active | The odd person experiments with it |
| 3Operational | We have active trials running |
| 4Systemic | It's live in real applications |
| 5Transformational | A company-wide setup, with our own tailored models |
What a strong score unlocks
A strong score means AI is part of what customers buy, not only how the back office runs. That is where the largest and most defensible returns tend to sit.
