Infrastructure readiness for AI
Infrastructure is the lightest-weighted pillar in the model. That is not because it does not matter, but because it is the easiest to buy and the least likely to be the real constraint once the other pillars are in place.
The questions ask whether teams can get compute and tooling when they need it, whether serving a model in production is a solved problem or a bespoke project each time, and how much of the stack is owned versus rented.
What this pillar measures
Cloud, compute, MLOps tooling, and serving infrastructure.
Infrastructure for AI is weighted at 9% of the overall AI Readiness score, which makes it the 9th heaviest of the nine pillars. 2 scored questions feed its maturity score. See how the weights combine.
What we ask
Every scored answer describes a recognizable state of the world rather than an agree/disagree rating. These are the questions behind this pillar.
- Where does your AI actually run when it's doing its job (answering, predicting, generating)?Where the AI runs when in use — your own servers, a cloud provider, or a mix of both.
- How do you handle the heavy computing power AI needs?AI often needs powerful chips (called GPUs) to train and run — this asks how you provide that.
What each level looks like
Each answer maps to a maturity score from 0 to 4. Reading down a column shows what an organization at that level typically says.
| 1Awareness | We're not running AI like this yet |
| 2Active | Only on our own servers, in-house |
| 3Operational | On one cloud provider, using their AI services |
| 4Systemic | A mix — cloud for the heavy lifting, local for day-to-day |
| 5Transformational | Across multiple clouds or locations, scaling automatically |
| 1Awareness | We don't have dedicated computing power for AI |
| 2Active | Limited access, mostly for experiments |
| 3Operational | A shared pool the AI projects draw on |
| 4Systemic | Dedicated capacity that scales up when needed |
| 5Transformational | Finely-tuned setup with specialised hardware |
What a strong score unlocks
A strong score means infrastructure is never the reason a use case waits. Experimentation is cheap, and the cost of running AI is known rather than discovered.
