Awareness: the first AI maturity level
Awareness is where most organizations honestly start. AI is on the agenda, people are experimenting individually, and leadership is asking questions. What is missing is a sponsor, a written strategy and a first use case with a number attached.
This level is not a failure. The organizations that struggle are the ones that stay here while believing they have moved on, running disconnected experiments that never become a decision.
What the Awareness level means

Overall score 1.0 – 1.8 on the 1–5 scale
AI is on your radar. Time to put your first real bet on the board.
On the AI curve: Innovation Trigger
AI has your attention and the conversation has started — the spark before anything is built.
The 90-day plan at this level
Direction: earn one credible proof point. Everything here points at a single goal — one AI bet that moves a number your CFO already watches. That's what funds the next, bigger bet on evidence instead of faith.
Priority 1 · Business Strategy
Pick one bet that proves AI can move a number.
- Identify one high-frequency, high-cost workflow where 10–20% efficiency would be visible to the CFO.Measure: Workflow named in 30 days, business owner named.
- Run a 30-day discovery with the workflow owner; quantify the prize in dollars.Measure: A defendable $ estimate of the upside, written down.
- Commit a small, time-boxed pilot (≤ $250K, 90 days). Define the kill criterion in writing.Measure: Pilot scoped, kill criterion agreed, sponsor named.
Priority 2 · Data Foundations
Data Foundations — minimum viable plumbing.
- Inventory the 3 datasets your pilot needs and document where they live.Measure: Dataset registry exists.
- Resolve the worst data-quality issue blocking the pilot.Measure: One named DQ issue closed.
- Define one access pattern (who can query, how).Measure: Access policy written, owner named.
Priority 3 · Organization & Culture
Build literacy in the team that will use the pilot.
- Run a 2-hour AI literacy session for the pilot team and their adjacent leaders.Measure: ≥ 80% attendance.
- Identify 2-3 internal champions who can speak confidently to AI outside their teams.Measure: Champions named, brief written.
- Stand up a simple weekly forum to share what is being learned.Measure: Forum running for 8 weeks.
What you will need to stand up
- A simple data inventory — List where the few datasets your first pilot needs actually live — you cannot start without it.
- A managed AI sandbox — Rent cloud AI services so the pilot starts in days, not after a six-month procurement.
- Usage + cost tracking — See what the pilot consumes so the CFO reads the bill and the benefit side by side.
